Compare Numbers Using Place Value
Learn to compare numbers by understanding their place value! When we look at two-digit numbers, we first compare the tens place. If the tens are the same, then we compare the ones place.
Why is 47 greater than 39?
- 47 has 4 tens (40) and 7 ones
- 39 has 3 tens (30) and 9 ones
- 4 tens is more than 3 tens, so 47 > 39!
Tips:
- Greater than (>) means the number is bigger.
- Less than (<) means the number is smaller.
- Equal to (=) means both numbers are the same.
- When comparing two-digit numbers, look at the tens place first! The number with more tens is always bigger. If the tens are the same, then compare the ones place.
- Example: 47 > 39 because 4 tens is more than 3 tens.
