These free interactive activities help second graders build a strong foundation in place value and rounding. Students will practice composing and decomposing 3-digit numbers, identifying hundreds/tens/ones, comparing and ordering numbers, and rounding to the nearest 10 or 100.
Understanding Place Value
In second grade, students move beyond counting—they start understanding what each digit in a three-digit number really means. These interactive activities help children see that 342 isn't just “three hundred forty-two,” but 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 2 ones. Through composing, decomposing, and building numbers, kids develop a strong number sense that will support everything from addition to rounding later on.

Once students understand place value, they're ready to compare numbers—and not just guess! These games guide them to look at hundreds first, then tens, then ones, so they can confidently say whether 467 is greater than 459. We also include playful sequencing tasks that build logic and prepare them for number lines and data interpretation later in the year.

Rounding isn't about “changing” a number. It's about finding a close, easier-to-use estimate. In Grade 2, we focus only on rounding to the nearest 10 or 100, always using place value as the anchor. These games give students visual and numerical practice so they can round 839 to 840 (not 800!) with confidence, especially when solving real-world problems like estimating how many books are in a stack.
